Mussels with white wine is one of my favorite appetizers. If I am asked to prepare a list of a handful of dishes that I want to each for the rest of my life, mussels with white wine is going to be among my top choices. It is delicious, nutritious, and easy to prepare.

However, it seems like feasting on a big bowl of mussels with white wine happens only when you are dining at a fancy restaurant. But you can make this epic dish at home and save some money. With just a few simple ingredients, you can cook mussels for the perfect light appetizer, or combine it with other dishes.

Mussels may seem a bit intimidating, especially if you haven’t cooked them before. But they are incredibly quick to make. In just a few minutes, you can prepare a tempting dish that is high in nutrients and flavour.

All you need is a big pot, and we are ready to go!

Ingredients

  • Mussels (3 pounds)
  • All-purpose flour (⅓ cup)
  • Olive oil (2 tablespoons)
  • Chopped shallots (1 cup)
  • Minced garlic (1 ½ tablespoon)
  • Unsalted butter (2 tablespoons)
  • Chopped plum tomatoes (½ cup)
  • Saffron threads (½ teaspoon)
  • White wine (1 cup)
  • Chopped flat-leaf parsley (⅓ cup)
  • Thyme leaves (1 tablespoon)
  • kosher salt (2 teaspoons)
  • Ground black pepper (1 teaspoon)

Special Instructions

  • Make sure you get cultivated mussels.
  • Do not use mussels whose shells are not tightly shut after keeping them in water to clean them.

Method

  1. Take a large bowl of water and add all-purpose flour to it. Put mussels in it and let them stay there for at least 30 minutes. This step will help make mussels pour out sand and clean them.
  2. Remove mussels from the bowl and drain them. Remove the beard from mussels.
  3. In a large non-aluminum pot, heat olive oil and unsalted butter over medium flames. Add chopped shallots to the pot and cook them for at least five minutes. After that, add minced garlic and cook it for around three minutes. Now, add plum tomatoes, salt, pepper, parsley, saffron, thyme, and wine to the pot.
  4. When the mixture begins to boil, add mussels to the pot. Stir the mix well, and cover the pot. Cook the blend over medium heat for at least 10 minutes. In between, shake the pot once or twice to ensure that mussels don’t burn.
  5. Your dish is ready! Add sauce to it.

Serve it warm! You can enjoy it alone or combine with pasta or any of your favorite side dishes.
